Carrots

I’m trying something a bit different with my carrots.

Aparently, carrot root fly can only fly below about 20"(500mm) above the ground. I had this idea that if I planted a big, deep container with carrots and then sat it on one of my growing shelves I could raise it high enough so that the carrot root fly wouldn’t be a problem.

I chose a container that is about 18"(450mm) deep and sat it on the shelf, a good, 24" (600mm) above the ground.

As you can see from the photo the carrots are doing ok so far. I’m about to start thinning them out and will be eating the thinnings in salads.

I’ll let you know in a few weeks if everything works out ok.
